AMO’IG THE PACK ICE,
PEACE AND THEN—FURY. DISCOVERY IN A BLIZZARD. (United Press Association— Copyright.) (Received This Day, 10-30 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. A dispatch from the Sir Douglas Mawson Expedition states that during the <doriouslv clear, calm evening hours on January 6, the Discovery steamed south-west through loose pack ice toward the coast on which it is hoped to effect a landing, passing floes bearin'l, curious denizens of these regions. ' Mirrored by the placid .waters, they made a fascinating midnight scene. A few hours later, meteorological chaos reigned. A tierce blizzard came down suddenly from the land slopes, but fortunately , there was open water nearby and into this tluv snip was stepred and rode out the fury of -the storm, though passing bergs looming like snectres through the drifting snow several times narrowly missed the ship. , , , ~ , The wind reached a velocity ot <() miles an hour and averaged 50 miles. The n-ale died down the next day.
