DEATH OF RACEHORSE.

SUSPECTED POISONING. (Special to the "Guardian.") HOKITIKA, Dee. 29. Mr E. W. Spencer's racing mare Piccaninny died during the night She competed 'here on Wednesday, and had further engagements the next day. In the morning it was found that the horse had been tampered with, and it is thought she had been doped. the mouth was badly burned and the horse was in a bad way. She had been under constant treatment ever since. It is believed that croton oil was used. A full investigation is being made, and a post mortem is being arranged. The racing and police authorities have the matter in hand. It has been suggested that the "dope" was intended for another horse in the i°cality but that the operator entered the wrong box. It is known that the box was entered by someone during the night. INQUIRY WANTED. HOKITIKA, Dec. 29. The Racing Conference has been requested by the Westland Racing Club to detail a racecourse inspector to make a full inquiry into the causes leading to the death of Piccaninny. The lo'cal police are also moving in the matter. Mr C. S. Neville, Stock Inspector, and others examined the horse in the early stages of the illness and suggested tratment which was carried out with every care.
