LOOKING BACK

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.

(From "Guardian," March 31, 1901)

A.A.C. and A.C. Concert.—For its Easter Monday concert, the Ashburton A.A.C. and A.C.E lias succeeded in arranging one of the best programmes ever presented to an Ashburton audience. It includes items from Mrs W. Johnston and Mrs C. M. Brooke, Messrs F. W. Hobbs, F. Collins, and J. Dykes, the last three being all new to Ashburton. Mr J. Dykes is a recent arrival from Glasgow and is considered the best comic ever heard in Ashburton. The programme also includes a cornet solo by Mr Arthur Savage, a visitor from Melbourne ; a song by Mr W. Anderson, aaid several selections by a first-class orchestra. The whole to conclude witih a screaming farce. Oratorio.—The Ashburton Musical Society will give a rendition of Stainer's oratorio "The Crucifixion" on Maundy Thursday in St. Stephen's Church, in aid of St. Mary's Home, Christchurch. Copies of the work were generously presented to the Society some time ago, ■and the members have been practising diligently and no doubt will give a. good presentation of this fine oratoria. New Post Office.—The woodwork of the roof at the new building is now completed and a portion of the roof is in place. The gable fronting Cameron Street is having the finishing touches put to it and serves to give ara idea of the handsome appearance of the building when duly completed.
