LOOKING BACK.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From "Guardian," October 24, 1900). Hampstead Town Board. —A meeting of the above Board was held last evening, when there were present:— Messrs G. W. Andrews (chairman), Silcock, McElrea, Taylor, Hardy, Thomas, and Burnard. Fishing.—Messrs A. Young and W. Huston spent yesterday fishing at the mouth of the llakaia River, the former obtaining 14 trout and the latter 10, the total weight being 1131bs. The anglers assert that the condition of the fish is not so satisfactory since last flood. They complain that the reserve intended for the grazing of visitors' horses has been eaten bare by being used for grazing sheep and stock. Hornby Sports—The following are the handicaps of tbe Ashburton competitors at the Hornby Sports to be held on November 2: —l2oyds handicap: J. McNaught scr, J. Fechney syds, H. Harrett 10yds; 1£ miles handicap: J. Fechney scr. Maiden race: H. Barrett Bvds.
Old Men's Outing.—The Mayor made arrangements with Mr Ward, Minister of Railways, during his visit to Ashburton yesterday to enable the old men at the Ashburton Home to see the Exhibition free of cbarge on being supplied with a pass. The Lucky Number—On Thursday night the fifth appropriation of £3OO of the Ashburton No. 2 Industrial Building Society was drawn by ballot, and fell to Mr Henry Stephenson. We 'understand that within two minutes of the draw, Mr Stephenson was offered £6O for the appropriation.
