Mr G. Hefford, who has been on a visit to Great Britain for the last few months, returned to Ashburton thif afternoon.

Lady Gwendolin Jellieoe (Earl Jelliooe’s daughter), who has just been operated on for appendicitis, is pro* gressing very well, says a London cablegram.

Mr A. H. Todd, who met with an accident on Tuesday evening, is now a patient in the Eye Department of the Christchurch Hospital. He was to undergo a further examination of the injured eye to-day.

Advice has been received that Mr S. P. McCallum, an ex-pupil of the Ashburton High School and a New Zealand Rhodes Scholar, has passed the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Oxford. The High School Board today decided to send a cablegram congratulating Dr. McCallum on his success. Dr. McCallum was a student at Canterbury College.
