RUNNING AND CYCLING EVENTS

A successful evening meeting was conducted on the Domain Oval yesterday by the Ashburton Amateur Cycling and Athletic Club. Spectators and entrants were numerous. The events resulted:

One Mile Handicap (four starters).— L Moore (120yds) 1, S. J. Gudsell (120yds) 2, G. Field (130yds) 3. Won by a foot, Field being well behind. At the end of the first lap the positionswere: Gudsell, Broker (160yds), Field, and Moore. Gudsell was m the lead at the end of the third lap. with Moore, Field, and Broker. About 150 yards/ from the tape Moore challenged Gudsell, and after a splendid sprint he reached the front, hield was well behind. Broker retired.

300 Yards (5).—J- Robilliard (syds) 1 G. L. Nicoll (Byds) 2, B. Lane (16yds) 3. Won by two feet, with five yards separating second and third. One Mile Cycle Race.—First heat: N. Cartwright (130yds) 1, -LB. Mora (60yds) 2, C. D. Doyle (60yds) 3. Second heat: P. T. Currant (50yds 1, G. Olds (70yds) 2, R. H. Wood (scr) 3 Final: Curran 1, Mora 2 Cartwright 3 The latter maintained a lead of about 80 yards for over three laps, but was passed at the home bend through a great sprint by Curran and Mora, the former winning by hall a length. Two Miles Cycle Raco.-R. H. Wood (scr) 1, N. Cartwright (200yds) 2, J. B. Mora (100yds) 3. Time, 4mm 49sec. Cartwright led for three laps, after which the field was bunched, with the exception of the scratch man, who made up little leeway until the fifth lap, at the end of which he was on equal terms. He led the final round, and successfully stalled oft challenges' by Cartwright and Moia, finishing a length ahead, with . Mora two lengths away. 400 Yards Relay Race.—R. Pellew and J. Robilliard (scr) 1, S. Gudsell and G. L. Nicoll (10yds) 2. Won on the tape.

BILLIARDS.

McCONACHY v. SMITH. In the billiard match, 16,000 up, W. Smith has scored 10,667, including breaks of 300, 350, 295, and 496 unfinished. Clark MeCanachy, the New Zealander (receive 4000) has made 10,070, including breaks of 136, 336, and 12/.

LAWN TENNIS.

DAVIS CUP CHALLENGE. NEW YORK, March 10. Spain has challenged for tho Davis Cup, and the challenge stipulates the American zone of play, bringing seven teams into competition in the Western Hemisphere. Spain prefers surfaces of clay and sand. .... . , Manuel Alonzo is likely to lead the team, which is expected to include Eduardo Flaquer. CAPETOWN, March 10. The Lawn Tennis Union has decided to cancel the South African entry foi the Davis Cup, as the leading players, including Raymond, are not available.

CYCLING.

SPENCER WINS M ATCH RACE. The three-cornered match race between Willie Spencer (America) and J. Henderson and A. Leathern (Chris - church) was decided at English Park last evening. Spencer won the first two distances, so there was no necessity for a third. Details are: First distance, quarter-mile.—Spen-cer, on the outside, was slow off the mark, and was a couple of lengths to the had rounding the top bend. With a great spurt along tho back lie caught ; and passed his two opponents, and, leading into the straight, was a comfortable winner by two lengths, lime, 31 2-ssec. „ Second distance, half-mile. —Spencer turned into the straight over a length to the good, and though both Leathern and Henderson threw out strong chalI lenses, crossed the line half a length to the good. Leathern was inches m j front of Henderson. ’Time, 66 4-ssec.
