ALIEN IMMIGRANTS.
A MARKED INCREASE. MOSTLY SOUTHERN EUROPEANS.
AUCKLAND, March 11. New Zealand appears to enjoy the honour of being among the countries most favoured for immigrating aliens, particularly from Southern Europe. Last year 833 foreign nationals arrived to take up their permanent, residence, as against 349 in 1923, Oi in 1922, and 252 in 1921, and present, indications would lead one to believe; that this year a record will he created. The principal figures were: _JugoSlovakia, 318 males, 66females; China, 81 6; United States, 13, 11; Germany, 5, 10; Switzerland, 22, 11; Norway, 16 In° addition. 108 Hindus, including 31 females, arrived as permanent residents. , . In 1923 the Chinese, whose numbeis are definitely restricted and who pay a poll-tax, headed the list with 99, the Jugo-Slavs numbering 79, and the Italians 25. Eighty-five Hindus, who are not included in the foreign total, also arrived. In 1922 Chinese again headed the list with a total of 158. There were 88 Hindus, and the next greatest total in that year was 54 Italians. In 1921 Italy sent 40 people and Jugo-Slavs only one. Hindus totalled 123. The grand total of aliens, including Hindus, arriving as permanent residents during the last four years is 2215. Statistics show, however, that: during this period 337 Hindus and 304 Chinese arrived as “ temporary visi- 1 tors,” hut during that time only 110 Hindus and 280 Chinese so classed are recorded as having departed. In January of this year the alien immigrants intending to settle permanently in the Dominion numbered 6/. including 15 Italians and 36 JugoSlavs.
