TROPICA!. DISEASES IN SAMOA.

For the purpose of studying tropical diseases in the Samdan Islands, the Western Pacific Research Expedition leaves shortly under Dr. Patrick Buxton, a former student of the London School of Tropical Medicine. The New Zealand Government is specially facilitating the expedition. COMMUNIST'S DAUGHTER SHOT. PARIS, September 18. A man called at the flat of Rappoport, a Communist leader, and asked to see him or a member of his family. A young woman replied: "Rappoport is not at home. I am his daughter, if you care to tell me what you want." " The ■'caller replied: "Oh, you are hies daughter," and thereupon he drew a revolver, and fired point-blank. The girl fell unconscious, while the man hastened to the nearest police station, where he confessed his crime. The man. proves to be a Russian ex-officer, who has been employed as a cleaner. It is supposed he wished to; avenge his country. Rappoport has been several times to Moscow, and is regarded as one of the most prominent Soviet rerepresentatives in France. FRUIT COMPANY'S LOSSES. (Received This Day, 9.15 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 18. The accounts of the Fruit and Prov duce Exchange Co. of Great Britain, Limited, for the 16 months ending December, last show a loss of £83,124. The 'directors state they are preparing a scheme which, if the shareholders approve, should place the company on a sound financial basis. The company imported a large quantity of Australian apples and pears.
