What is believed to be the greatest of all ooal piers m respect to the rapidity with which coal may be delivered over the side of vessels is the new B. and O. Pier at Curtis Bay, Baltimore, U.S.A. The s.s. Maiden was loaded at Curtis Bay with 7222 tons of coal m 118 minutes. This is at the rate of 3672 tons per hour or 61.2 tons per minute. We have here what is undoubtedly a world's record for fast loading into a single ship. At the same pier, on October 25, 1920, m the space of a ' 24-hour day, 910 cars, or 41,678 tons, were dumped over the side into various vessels.
