Baron Hayashi, speaking at a luncheon here, said: "If we go to Washington m a proper spirit I have n6 doubt we shall achieve a success which will be equally satisfactory to America and all of us. lam happy to notice a growing sentiment favouring closer friendship between America and Britain. I hope and believe the same sentiment will grow between America and Japan." (Cheers.) Baron Hayashi regretted the present internal struggles m China and said he believed that eventually Britain, France, America and Japan would reach a basis of agreement enabling the country to be developed and markets extended, providing employment m Europe. He hoped the Washington Conference would only discuss broad principles, leaving the details to be arranged m the future. "Japan intends," lie added, "to do her utmost to cooperate with England, America and France to bring about the peace of the world."
