OBITUARY.
THE REV. J. A.^/UXFORD. AUCKLAND, January 28, Chaplain-Generai J. A. Luxrord, a veteran of the South African War and the Great War, died to-day. The late chaplain was a prominent member of the Methodist Church.' During the Great War he took part m the Gallipoli campaign, m which he was wounded, and lost a leg. . , When he recovered he took up the position of director of Methodist chaplains, and himself served as chaplain at Walton-on-Thames. Mr Luxford was wellknown m Canterbury. He began his ministry at Woodend m 1876, and two years later came to Chrietchurch. In 1884 he was at Kaiapoi, and left there m 1888 to go to Reefton. In 1894 he was minister at St. Albans, and m 1902 at Lyttelton. ■„„ It was just before his appointment to Lytelton that he served as chaplain m the Boer War. He was president of the New Zealand intimately associated with the volunMethodist Conference m 1903. He was teer and territorial forces, and at the time of his death was fated as 'chap-lain-colonel. He was held in ;i the highest esteem by his many friends both m and outside the Methodist Church, and by the innumerable "diggers" who learned to admire his fine qualities on active service.
