DIVORCE COURT PERJURY.
. "Perjury in the Divorce Court is said to have become a crying scandal," said Mr Travers Humphreys in a case at the Old Bailey, in which Sam Appleton, 32, of Bolton, Lanes., was sentenced to 18 months' hard labour for perjury, and Nellie Greenough to 15 months' hard labour for suborning him. > Appleton was a widower, who lived, with Greenough while her husband was a prisoner in Germany. When he returned after the armistice the husband went to live with another 'woman. The suggestion was made, said Mr Humphreys, that the Greenoughs should get a divorce, and it was agreed that the woman should present the petition. On the question of cruelty Appleton gave evidence in the name of J. Lewis. . That evidence was a complete series of collusive and perjured statements, and after a decree nisi had been granted inquiries by the King's Proctor led to its being rescinded.
