DR THACKER'S MAYORALTY WIN

HARBOUR &OARD RETURNS.

Very little excitement was displayed in the Ashburton (bounty yesterday over the election of two representatives tor this district on the Lyttelton Harbour Board, and, as will be noticed from the figure* tabulated below, the polling was small. Mr R. Galbraith had the aavantaee of a substantial Borough vote, and, having polled well in the country districts, came out at the top ol the list, with a total of 509. votes. At the present time. a.tie exists between Messrs C. Reid and T. BlacKley, with 346 each. If the re-count does not disclose an alteration in these figures, the Returning Officer has power by the Act to decide the issue, by lot. Mr T. Doherty, the ryoungest candidate in the field, scored 220 votes, and out of this number 90 votes were obtained m his own district. A eood deal of confusion existed in the minds of some of the County voters regarding^ the number of votes they were emitted to exercise, and many or them were under the impression that they were entitled to votes according to valuation, as is the case in a County Council election. Some of them persisted in this argument, and actually confused some of the deputy-returning officers, who telegraphed for further instructions. However, only one vote was allowed to each voter, and where a partnership existed only one member <;ould record his vote.

The following are the. results of the votes recorded: —
