The following names of district men are included in the list of soldiers returning by the s.s. Paparoa, which is expected to reach Wellington on or about May 13: —G. F. Hooper,' Mitcham; W. G. Mably, Ashburton; T. Read. Ashburtou; M. Sutherland, Ashburton ; J. A. Woods, Ashburton. Sister J. Hunt,' Ashburton, is also returning by the Paparoa.
Mr A. Read, Eiffelton has received word that his son, Lanee-Cornofal P. H. Read, who left with the Sixteenth Reinforcements, is "returning on the Rinuitaka. which is clue at Wellington on May 17. Mr Duncan Neven, manager for Mdlle. Antonia Dolores, was in Ashburton yesterday and to-day making preparations for the appearance of Madame Dolores at the Theatre Royal on Thursday next. Miss E. Burnard has joined the Ashburton County Hospital staff. Mr Hnrrv Lauder, the comedian, arrived at Sydney yesterday. He received a cablegram announcing thntthe Kine had conferred a knighthood on him.
