SURREY HILLS.

[To the Editor, " Guardian."}

Sir. —1 noticed a returned soldier is anxious to take up land in this County, and by the tone of his letter his attention is directed towards Surrey Hills. As an old settler in this County, I can assure the soldier that he is suffering from a vision that is far too flowery, and he will be a grey-headed, tottering old man before he or any other soldier is ever settled on the estate referred to. The best thing the lad can do is to get his Returned Soldiers' Association to start advocating for suitable land to be cut up in this County, and keep hammering away at it until the Government does the proper thing by the ibovs. I am sure the association would have the support of every fair-minded settler in the County. There is plenty of good land apart from Surrey Hills that could be bought suitable for soldiers, and nearer to Ashburton.
