PRICE OF MEAT.
[To tuk Emtou, "Guardian."]
Sir, —'Like a good many more housewives ai Ashburton vvlio nave been striving ior a long time to live within the means of the weekly "envelope," 1 was Ueiighted on Thursday last to notice par advertisement in the "Guardian" iroia the local butchers, that a "reduction was to take place on Saturday. I'oii can imagine my surprise when I purchased the customary supply of niuat- for the household, to find that the said reduction, as far as price was concerned, had not yet come ;ntQ existence. Now, Sir. I would JLjke to ask what this word ''reduction" hi the- advertisement actuality meant. "Was it a bit of bait thrown out to the public in order that the butchers would get a wholesale reduction in the 'meat in stock, and not have to carry any of it over through the holidays, or was it a printer's error, or intended for a joke on the part of the butchers ? Perhaps some of tho butchers after they have counted up their surplus profits for the day, would find time to explain the meaning of this mystic advertisement, and also why it is not possible now, when a sheep costs 10s per head less than it did three months ago, to retail the mutton at less than the retail price three months ago
