Before ihis departure tlie King had expressed a wish to see him in order to personally express his thanks and gratification for the valuable services rendered by 'him and. the New Zealand troops under his command. Unfortunately General Russell was unable at the time to visit Buckingham Palace, and his Majesty sent a letter wishing him a safe' and comfortable journey• back to New Zealand. Before leaving England General Russell was quite restored to health.
