The following concludes the report of the monthly meeting of the Ashburton County Council yesterday :— ■
The clerk reported that the amount of rates levied this year was £9803 15s 7d. and those paid to March 31 were £4499 12s sd, leaving £5304 3s 2d to be collected. The water rates levied were £3497 lls, and paid £3011 5s 6d, leaving £486 5s 6d to be collected.
The Inspector reported that during the month motor-drivers across the Ashburton Bridge had complied well with the by-laws, and only four drivers exceeded the speed limit. The traction engine traffic had been very extensive, and drivers had complied well with the by-law considering the dry state of the roads.
, .The Reserves Committee reported having inspected reserves along the main line of railway from nenr ChertRev towards Ashburton, "VVinslow, Windermere, Ashton, and Longbeach, the leases of • which expire in September and November next.
The chairman and Cr. Drummond were authorised to fix. a date for holdinc a conference in regard to the abolishing of road boards.
. The council conferred in committee with Mr Purnell in regard to giving relief to Ruapuna settlers in the payment of maintenance in the Ruapnna main race from the intake for a distance of six miles. The legal opinion was to the effect that the present agreement could be revoked, but the council, without remodelling its bylaws, .would have no source of revenue from which to maintain the race.
Accounts amounting to £195 6s 9d were passed for payment.
