(Received April 1, 10 a.m.) LONDON, March 25. The secretary ,pf. the Australasian Merchants' Association on.being interviewed, said that , provided the rates were reasonable, the merchants would prefer a steady system of freights. The Conference had hitherto' maintained this, and offered all the itonnage re-, quired. The merchants were urging a reduction of the present high rates, which reduction was expected during the, next few months. They would prefer a natural gradual reduction which would cause a minimum of interference. Any rate-cutting would seriously damage Australasia's trade with the United States ■■..-•'■
