A French eommunique^states:—
The struggle was keenest, at Chemin dcs Dames. The enemy's attacks were made with large forces, preceded by a violent bombardment, and were everywhere repulsed. In the district of Cerny de la Bovelle and on the monument of De Hurtebise, the Germans were twice bloodily defeated.
A powerful effort was made further east against the California Plateau, but the assaulting waves were mown down by our barrage. The enemy gained a momentary footing north-eaist of the salient of the plateau,' but a bayonet charge ousted them in disorder. , The number of German dead testifies to the absolutely purposeless sacrifices. Our positions were entirely maintained, and we in turn carried a German first-line trench on a front of 1200 metres, north-east of Chevrusl.
