TWO PRESENTATIONS.

BRAVERY COMMENDED

LONG SERVICE RECOGNISED

: The proceedings at the. recruiting meeting at the Theatre Royal last night were very happily opened with two presentations —one as the commendation of a plucky act on the part of a boy, and the other as the recognition of a life of conscientious service.

At the request of the Mayor, the Minister of Justice (Hon. Dr. McNab) handed a Royal Humane Certificate (suitably framed) to Marton Rex Pearce, who some time back pluckily rescued a child from drowning., in the Ashburton Baths.; Dr.- McNab said that' during the whole of; his, political, career, dating, over a period of • 22 years, it was the. first • occasion -.on which he. had" had the honour of performing a function of that- kind. It was a relief to him during the present crisis, when so much was being done in the destruction of life, to pay a compliment to one''who hnd performed a deed of bravery in saving life. He then made the presentation, and called for three hearty cheers for the . young hero, a call which was loudly responded to. •

The Mayor, at the request of the Postmaster-General, presented Mr Clifford Sage with an Imperial long service medal, Mr Saga having some time since retired after having been over 35 years a linesman in the Telegraph Department. Having made the presentation, the Mayor called for three cheers for the recipient, who had not only been a good public servant but a good and valuable citizen. Mr Sage thanked the Mayor, and specially asked him to convoy his best thanks and best wishes .to the King and the Governor.
