BARING SQUARE LITERARY AND DEBATING SOCIETY.
The usual weekly meeting of the Baring Square Literary and Debating Club was held last evening;' when the llev. J. D. McArtluir presided over a large attendance of membors. The subject for tho evening was an address by Mr G. Oldrievo, sen., who provided a very interesting hour and a-half, speaking on impressions gathered during a trip to the South Sea Islands. The speaker dealt first with the Fiji group, and later with Tonga and Samoa. .His discourse on the habits and characteristics'^of the peoples, and various phases of native life, was very instructive. He made .. frequent and special reference to the work done in the missions, and showed how Christianity was gaming a hold amongst the inhabitants. Ho also pointed out how it was that Samoa had fallen in,to Germnn hands. The lecture was illustrated by a number of interesting photographs taken by the speaker. At the conclusion of his address, ft heartyvote of thanks was tendered to Mr Oldrieve. ' ■ '.'".. ' ' ' ..;..,
