Match Against Southland.

INVERCARGILL, March 1(L The Australians - arrived iv , Invcr— cargill this morning, and commenced their match against Southland atItugby Park in the afternoon in ideal weather, on. a beautiful wicket, and before an attendance of close on KXKJt people. ■
. Southland won the toss and went tothe wickets, but did not start too promisingly, the first five wickets falling: for a total of 35 runs! The later batsmen, however, put a different complexion on matters, and the total had risen to t 156 when .the last wicket fellafter two hours' batting. Kavanagh,.. John Hamilton and Poole batted. very freely, and placed respectable totals to their credit, Poole being undefeated with 50, when the innings closed. With an. hour and a half to bat the Australians opened with McGregor an<& - Mailey, but the pair did not stay long together, the former being cleaned bowled by Doig when ho had scored 7 runs. Mailey carried his total to-13, when" Bannerman .beat him. Dolling and Cody carried "the score along at a steady rate, until at 85 the tormer got his leg in front to Kavanagh am* retired. Sims did . not stay long 1,.. spooning a ball up to square-leg. Cody was batting freely, and with ColHhar took the total. along to 113 for four wickets when, stumps were drawn at--5.30 for the day.
