ASHBURTON CARPENTERS AND JOINERS.

Mr JB\ J. Bearnoj who has been in Ashburton during the past few days, gives some interesting information concerning the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners. He stated that on tho coining into operation of the now industrial, award, which is the outcome of conferences recently held in Wanganui and Wellington between the Master Builders' Federation and the Amalgamated Society, it will be necessary for all journeymen carpenters and joiners to become members of the organisation mentioned. There had not 'been a branch of the A.S.C. and J. in this district formerly, but Mr Bearne formed and opened a branch on Saturday night, and a good number of carpenters and joiners were enrolled. 'The next step will be ,'to register the Ashburton branch under "The Conciliation and Arbitration Act" as an industrial union. The new proposed award has been brought before, Mr Triggs (Conciliation Commissioner), and it: only, has now to be ratified by the President of the Arbitration Court, and will then be in operation, which Mr Bearno thinks will be' early in April.
