A REPRESENTATION QUESTION.
SOUTH RAKAIA TO HAVE AN EXTRA MEMBER. •
' At yesterday's meeting of the Ash- < burton County Council the Chairman (Cr. C. J. Harper) introduced the matter of the representation on "the Council of the different ridings of the County. The Council at' present consisted of nine members, but there was authority of law to increase the number to 12. The present representation was as follows:— Rateable Hiding. Members. Somers ... 1 812 >39C Longbeach ... 1 /96.H9 Raniitata ... 1 908,892 The South Rakaia Riding was the richest in the County. At present it had only, one representative, but was entitled to two. As the Council's Solicitor had stated that the number of members could be increased to anything up to 12, the chairman therefore moved that, at the next election, the South Rakaia Riding be allowed to re- . turn two representatives, bringing tho constitution of the Council up to 10 members.
Cr W. T. Lill seconded the motion, which was carried.
