"I'VE GOT HIM SAFE.", According to information received by Sir Cecil Spring-Rice, Benton was a wealthy ranch owner, . and protested against Villa committing depredations on his estates. Benton hotly told Villa | he considered him a bandit. American reporters interviewed Villa after Benton V disappearance, but Villa, denied all knowledge except that Benton threatened him with a revolver. Hs asked the reporters•■what ought to be done in such circumstances, and the reporter suggested, laughingly, that Benton ought to be isbot. Villa answered, lightly. "I've got him safe." t Benton was then dead and buried, as was afterwards discovered.
