The report of the Commissioners appointed to inquire into; the cost of the trans-continental railway, states that the Commission which had charge of £he construction exercised no economy, and.-£8,000,000 was needlessly squandered, the original estimate being* exceeded five-fold. Many large contracting firms gained huge profits by subletting contracts and doing nothing j whatever themselves.\ i Parliamentary action is anticipated j as the result .of "the report.
