NEWMAN BEATS GRAY
LONDON, February 8
Jfevvman ran out when Gray's score was 15,164, thus winning the first of the three matches of 18,000 up for £100 a-side. He wa's conceded 4000. Gray is not discredited, even regarding the result as the sole criterion of merit, for Newman would beat any living player with the same odds. Gray 0 is even improving in control of ivory balls, and still has a chance of I winning the English championship to take place in March. He is the finest living player of individual shots. When he gets the pace of ivory balls it is almost cortnin that he will make four 'figure breaks in a championship match.
