LONDON, February 6

Sir Ernest Shackleton has decided to purchase the recently-built Norwegian ice vessel Polaris, which will be coniverted to use oil ■ fuel and be renamed Endurance. She will be employed under the command of Captain Davis in the Weddell Sea. The Aurora probably will be selected to work on the Ross Sea side. \ Failing her, Admiral Peary's vessel, the Roosevelt, is under offer.

The Endurance will be manned by navy men and the Ross Sea ship by men of the merchant service.

Captain Ordeless, of the Royal Marines, head of the Deal motor school and an expert Alpinisj;, has joined the expedition.

Several of Captain Scott's and \Dr Mawson's men have applied to join the Shackleton expedition. Two of the latter have been selected to serve on the scientific staff.
