ELECTRIC LIGHT.

ACCURATE MEASUREMENT ASKED FOR.

COUNCILLOR BUCHANAN'S :•■ REQUEST.

Last evenin£, at the meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council, Councillor Buchanan asked if the Councillors were aware that a ,large-number of consumers of electricity had no meters ?

The Mayor said he was aware of the fact. ■ . ■■•■••.

Cr. Priest said that the matter had been previously reported. Cr. Ferriman stated that he thought it did not matter so long >as there ■was a measuring apparatus at the power house.

Cr. Buchanan said that the Council was being paid on the amount of electricity used. If there were no meters they could only estimate the amount consumed approximately, and therefore tlie Council would be paid only approximately. He thought there should be an accurate check. The Electric Lighting Company might be giving some light away so as to run it cheaply and compete against the Gas Company. He held no brief for the (3-as Company. The company might possibly give some electricity, away to* gain popularity. The Mayor said. ho thought that when they had purchased an instrument for measurement at such a high figure, that that'would have been sufficient. He asked Councillor Buchanan if he held any shares in the Gas Company ? Councillor Buchanan: "No, sir." ; The Mayor, continuing, said he was very pleased to hear that. Or. Priest concluded ; some remarks by ' saying that he thought there should be a meter wherever the light was installed. ■

Or. Stewart said that the meters would be very expensive. If the Electric Light Company were losing he thought they would very soon provide meters. ,

Or. Buchanan agreed to give notice of motion regarding the matter.
