LOCAL AND GENERAL.

At the., meeting of the Borough Council last evening the flooding of West Street in times of rain was discussed, but councillors were not very enthusiastic over the matter, which was allowed to stand, over sine die.

1 At Cliristchurch yesterday letters of administration were granted in the estate of Margaret Houston (Mr It. Kennedy), late of Allenton, Ashburton.

The Royal Artillery Band passed through Ashburton-by this afternoon's express, occupying two reserved carriages. A large number of people was on the platform, being attracted 'thither in the hope of hearing the band play. They were disappointed. --.;'

Last evening at the meeting 'of the Borough Council no tenders for the supply of chaff were received. and the Works Committee was empowered to buy in email quantities until such times as.chaff was more plentiful.

The Main Trunk express was'delayed last night at Penrose (says an _ Auckland message), owing to the carriage of a local train being derailed. Up till 11.45 p.m. the obstruction had not been removed, and the authorities were unable.to state what damage had been done to the line. It was expected that the express would not be delayed much after midnight.

The Ashburton River, constantly changing its course, has now confined itself to the centre of the riverbed. There are many small side channels, but the main body of has been diverted from the south bank, where, by action of recent freshes, erosion has taken place to some extent. The river is at about its usual height, and: is clear.

At the meeting,of the Borough Council last evening" it was agreed to grant the high-pressure water supply to a number of ratepayers over tho Northeast Belt, in, accordance with the terms of the recently-drawn-up , legal agreement.

The Public Service and senior free place scholarship examinations, which have been conducted at the Ashburton High School under .the supervision of Mr C. D. Hardie, were' concluded yesterday. Junior free place and junior national (Education Board) scholarship examinations will be commenced at the High School to-morrow, Mr Hardie again being in charge. The Matriculation and University examinations will be held in Ashburton shortly.
