THE FISHING SEASON.
Mr Henry Margetts, the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society's ranger, in--1 formed one of our reporters that there is a good deal of fine fishing water at the. mouth of the Ashburton river, near the huts. Although the water was cloudy on Wednesday, it was then just right for fishing; and "provided the weather clears before Friday, and the water gets no thicker," said Mr Margetts, "there should be some good takes." Mr Margetts says that he has noticed a large number of fish rising m the lagoon for several weeks past; but, m his opinion, the fishing season will prove more satisfactory to anglers about the middle of October, when trout follow the silveries m from the sea \n large numbers. Mr Margetts says that the silveries invariably come m from the ocean during the second week of October.
:There are now 27 huts on the Society's reserve at the mouth of the river, and four additional accommodation houses will be erected at an early ,da*t<s. .'/.Mr Margetts states that there is good- fishing water between the mouth and the Ashburton traffic bridge. • t . The first official report as to the condition of the Ashburton county rivers for th© fishing season, which opens tomorrow, reads as follows: Rakaia, fishable; Upper Ashburton, discoloured; Lower Ashburton, dirty; Rangitata;, clear.
A special train of ten carriages from Christchurch passed through Ashburton shortly after 11 o'clock this morning for Orari, m connection with the Geraldine Racing Club's meeting. A large number of persons entrained at Ashburton.
Mr F. Clark, of Ashburton, won a number of prizes at the Geraldine spring flower show, which was opened on Wednesday.
