LET IT CUT BOTH WAYS.

Mr A. Kennedy. -.-■ secretary of the Farm Labourers' Union, laid a somewhat novel proposition -before the Farmers' Union at ■■■Christchurch on Wednesday. He said there was: a demand that farm servants should produce references from their last employers. He thought the. idea should be made to cut both ways and that the farmers should get references from their servants stating that they , were good employers. In connection with this point ho cited an ' instance, of a married couple who had gone to work for a farmer some considerable distance from Christchurch. ' After .being there nine weeks they found the situation intolerable and had to leave. Their expenses to and from the place ran into £S 14s, and their earnings amouni>ed to £13, leaving them less than a pound a week for the time they had worked. It subsequently transpired that this particular employer had had no fewer than five married couples cor.' i ;ig and going during the preceding' sew.a months.
