He had endeavoured to borrow some money from a young, mail namM Alfred Hufit,. in, .the employment of Mt Hanrfihsii* bstey and Hunt had subsettnently. missed Ji| purse,: containing^, the miattertfas reported to the police,: -and it had been ascertained that Tuapoki was the thief. He arrived, m Ashburton, and while boarding at a house he had 1 been robbed of 16s,..which represented V the whole of his money,; "When his tnohey was gone he had nor where to stop, and being hungry and cold, he went to Alfred Hunt, with whom he was acquainted,, and „asked, for^ the loaii 'of 2s to pay ,f6r his tea, and breakfast. He waited for some time, but Hunt did not make his appearance, and. accused then went inside and found the purse and money, which he stole. "I am very sorry for what I have done," he concluded; "but the temptation was too strong for me." '. The Bench, taking into consideration the previous bad record of the accusejl,. sentenced him to one month s\,amprisonment for the theft of lid mentioned in the charge, and two months for the theft of the puree and 28s, the sentences to run concurrently, with hard labour. . „ j The Court then adjourned.
