Australia's Drink Bill.
The tremendous amount of money expended by Australians in strong drink ia generally supposed to be great, but it may startle a great many peopie to know that the annual alcohol bill for the whole Commonwealth stands at about £14,500,000. Keforiners are sometimes charged by the misinformed with exaggeration, bit tbe amount of distress and national loss which lies behind this can hardly bo expressed in tof> forcible toims. Ag-unst this, only £7,250,000 was spent last yo'ir in broiri, ■£;i,75<!,000 in sugar, and =83,030,0 )0 in t-i.i and coffee. The question comas home to >ne with starling suddenness wheu he is told that the drink bill for last y<aar wouUl cover the whole coat of th j Commonwealth Government, aud would run all our railway?, and pay for all oik education as well. Considering that we are only a young natioa, it; is high timo that the question of the continuance of the liquor traffi ■ should be put into the hanls of the poopl« for their determination.
