Particulars published in the " Marlborough Daily Times " concerning the applications for land lodged in connection with the Flaxbourne Estate sub-division show tbac amongst 401 applicants were 117 farmers and 40 farm labourers. A " deaf teacher " and a constable were others amongst the number. One applicant described his occupation as " looking for land," and another entered in the column eet apart for occupations, " ten years' hard graft ; no occupation at present." A female applicant described herself as " a spinster engaged in farming."
