Hurricane in the Islands.

United Press Association—Per Electric Telegraph— Copyright. ■ Sydney. May 30 The steamer Germania, from the Islands, reports that a hurricane devastated the Caroline Islands. It burst over the group at Easter with terrific fury, levelling houses and wrecking native plantations. The fall brunt was felt at Ponape and Kasuie. Twenty natives were killed at Ponape and five at Kasuie. It is estimated that the damage will amount to £150,000. Two wrecks were reported—the schooner Diana, owned by a Jaluit company, and the. schooner Ponape, belonging to the German Government. All hands were saved. Eeceived May 31, 9.59 a.m. Sydney, May 31 The hurricane was accompanied by a high tidal wave, and all the low lying islands round Ponape were submerged. Practically all the buildings at Ponape and Kasuie, including the churches and mission stations, were levelled to the ground.
