Christchitrch, May 25 The local wheat market has had a firmer tone during tha past few dnys, partly on account of the London market having lisen one shilling par quarter, and also heoause of the scarciiy of offerings. There are, however, no cheap freights at present being offered by direct steamer, and shippers say that there is therefore little or no margin between local and London prices. It is reported that wheat offering last week at 2s s<l cannot now be bought under 23 7d, but a good shipping line of Tuscan has been secured at 2s sd, and other small lots at » slight advance on late rates. Oats are firmer, and supplies scarce. Prices are showing an upward tendency. There is a hotter enquiry for barley but none is offering. Potatoes are meeting with a better demand, and supplies nre rather tcarce at present. The price is still £4< per ton.
