An Important Anniversary.
Sydney, April 29 The hundred and thirty-fifth anniversary of the landing of Captain Cook was celebrated at Botany Bay. Patriotic speeches were delivered by members of the Ministry and others.
Population Statistics. :
The population of New South Wales at the end of Maroh was 1,469,920.
Crowdingl at Theatres,
The City Council has adopted a byj-law against the queue system at the entrance to theatres on the ground that it causes a block on the sidewalk.
Colonial Sue:ar Company.
At a meeting of the Colonial Sugar Coy, the profits for the half year were shoirn to be £171,162. A dividend at the rate of 10 per cent per annum was declared ; also a jubilee dividend of 2| per cent. JB 16,000 was carried to the replacement fund, and .£84,963 forward. The large profits were shown to be due to the advance m the sugar market and record business m refined sugar. Theprospeots of the coming crop are satisfactory.
Socialism m Australia.
Brisbane April 29 At the annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce the president attributed the bad results of the year to the disoouragement of private enterprise] and the effects of federation. The Minister of Agriculture declared the Government would not be forced by sooia* lists. The Labour platform was rapidly becoming socialistic, and its trend was to undermine the throne and the altar of the family. If the sugar bonus was not extended, there would be a wave of feeling which would sever Queensland from this accursed federal union. Adelaide April 29 At the annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce the president said that after fighting the drought for years they were now threatened with socialism which they would have to fight with all their strength.
Melbourne, April 29 Fred Perkins has been sentenced to five and George Williamson to three years"imprisonment for the recent robbery of £172 from:Kiiig, a New Zealand gamdigger. Williamson was ordered to refund to King .£IOO found m his possession.
