BOROUGH SCHOOL.

The annual meeting of boufeholdors of the Borough Sshnol district way held in the Borough School last evening. Tho chair wah ocaupied hy Mr W. .Silcouk (Chairman of tha uuf.!;oir..<; Committee), and amongst those present were Messrs U. Beech, W. G, Hillier, J. M. Priest, R. McCallum, and the Key. W. L. Salter, members of the outgoing Committee, About thirty householders were present, including five ladies. The Chairman said he was disappointed at the small attendance, but this was probably a good 3ign, showing that the outI going Committee had done nothing to give the householders any dissatisfaction. The Secretary read the annual report, in which were quoted the Inspector's remarks at laft examination :— "The programme is approached in an earnest and liberal spirit, and alike in mechanical detail and in intelligence of j treatment, the teaching gives evidence of S careful and capable treatment." Pupils of the school last year took first and fourth places in the Junior National Scholarship Examinations, another pupil winning a Board of Education Scholarship. This is the second year in succession in which a pupil of the school has held premier place on the Junior National Scholarship list for this district. The Inspeotor had commended the teaching staff of the Allenton School at the la3t examination. Owing to a generous increase in the amoant allowed for incidental expenses, the Committee would be enabled to provide additional comforts for the children, and keep the sohool premises in better sepair than in the past. Sixteen Committee meetings had been held during the year, attendance at these by members being as follows:—Rev W. L. Suiter 16, Messrs |W. J. Silcock and R. McCallum 15, Messrs G. S. Mathias and C. Beech 14, Mesan J. R. Hart and J. M. Priest 13, Mr W. G. Hillier 11. The annual balance-sheet showed an expenditure of £1195 18s lOd, receipts £1237 5s 2d, balance in hand £42 7s Od. Liabilities on 32st March £5 43 Bd. In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, the Chairman said he thought everybody would congratulate the School on the work done during the year. Mr J. McGregor had proved an able successor to Mr C. D. Hardie, and he had no doubt the status of the school would be well maintained. During the year the Committee had worked well together, every member doing his best for the School. Mr Hillier, who was credited with only 11 attendances in the year, was not elected at tha annual meeting, but was appointed later in the year. Mr Hillier's attendance compared favourably with that of the rest of the Committee. Mr C. Dixon, in seconding the adoption of the report, said that the School's continuous success was extremely gratifying. « The report and balance sheet were adopted unanimously without disenssion. Correspondence was dealt with as under:— From Mr Wm. Foster, Secretary of the N.Z. Educational Institute, asking that the matter of providing a superannuation fund for teachers should be brought before the annual meeting of householders.—Received. The Chairman spoke in favour of a superannuation scheme. Mr W. L. Salter moved that this meeting ask the Government to legislate in the direction of providing a superannuation fund for school teachers. Seconded by Me D. Stock, and carried. Mr Hendry moved, and Mr Meddins seconded, a hearty vote of thanks to the teaching staff.—Carried by acclamation. Mr J. McGregor, on behalf of the teaching staff, suitably acknowledged the compliment. Mr, Dixon moved, and Mr Leohner seconded, a vote of thanks to the retiring Coinmittae.—Carried by acclamation. The election of the new Committee was proceeded with, and resulted as follows : — Mr W. J. ?Si!cock (31 votes), Ray. W. L. Salter (28), Messrs J. M. Priest (2fi), W. G. Hillier (24), C. Beech aud J. R. Hart (23), R. MoCallum (22), G. S. Mathias (21), and T.Hayes (17). At a me9ting of the newly elected Committee Mr W. Silcock was unanimously reelected Chairman. Mr J. B. Christian was unanimously reappointed secretary at the same salary. It was decided to re-appoint the present caretaker of the Main school building at a salary £2 in advance of that paid la^t year. It was deoided to re-appoint the present caretaker of the Allenton side sohool at the same salary as last year. It was decided to meet on the second Monday iv each month at 8 p.m. It was decided to instruct the secretary to invite tenders for the school coal supply, to be in by next meeting. Messrs Hart and Baech were appointed a Visiting Committee to report at next meeting. The meeting then adjourned.
