Returning Troopers. —- Among the Seventh Contingent troopers who returned by the Manila, which has just arrived afe Wellington, are the following representatives of Ashburton: —• Lance-Corporal Smith, Private McNaught, and Bugler Tovey. Coursing—The coursing meeting at Oamaru was concluded yesterday, the Coronation Stakes being won by Barney O'Hea (Ashburton), Ladybird runner-up, Navy Blue (Ashburton) won the Supplementary States, Blafkboy being runner-up. Primitive Methodist Church.—-The Rev. ii. H. Mann commences a fortnightly mission to-morrow m the Primitive Methodist Church. !£r Mann has been much used of God m our southern stations, and it ia expected that we shall have stirring times m this town. Those who want to hear an exceptional preacher of the gospel should hear Mr Mann. Arrangements . are being made to warm the Church during the cold winter months, which should be a fjirjbher inducement to attend this mission. Tije Coronation Pji*ner.—Mr Joshua Tufikep desires us to state that too mugh credit has been given him jn connection with the dinner to the inmates of the Old Men's Home on Coronation day, and wishes it known that the Charitable Aid Board subsidised the amount collected by him, viz.—one hundred shillings—by shilling for'shilling. We are pleased, to state that so abundant was the provision made on Coronation day that it provided good fare for the ne*t day also. Pigeon Race.—The Tjmaru Pigeon Plying Club wound up its season with flights from Ashburton and Chplstohurch. fhe former race was won by Mr Young's Vincent, which covered the 43| miles at the rate of 1493 yards per minute. The race from Christchurch, for which 27 birds were released, was won by the same bird, which flew the 93f miles m 2 hours 80 minutes 10 seconds, or an average rate of 1287 yards per minute. Clark was the only Ashburton exhibitor, and he secured a number of prizes scoring m Minorcas, Silver Hamburgs, Polish Houdans, coloured Dorkings, White Wyandottes, Plymouth Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, Brahmas, Buff Cochins, and Ducks. A supper was given to the visitors m the Oddfellows' Hall after the show. Rathbb Unbusinesslike.—The method m force m this country of forwarding treasury cheques m envelopes with no advice or particulars sometimes leads to mistakes which might be serious under certain circumstances. This morning Mr Sinclair of Seaview showed us two Government cheques amounting to over £100 which had beeirforwarded without any letter to Mr T. Smith who is m his employ and has no idea of why the money has been sent. Enquiries are now being made by Mr Sinclair for Mr Smith with a view to obtain further information, it being supposed/that the cheque ia intended for a trooper of the, same name.
