Death of Mrs C E Fooks
Residents in Ashburton and throughout the county will regret to learn of the death last night oi Mrs Catherine Fooka, the wife ©1 Mr O E Fo'oktf Boreqgh .Engineer, Untjl a fpw months ago Mra Fooka enjoyed splendid health, ana on the celebration of her golden wedding, at the beginning of the present year, it was remarked how well and strong she appeared, and her fresh color and bright manner, considering her age, were matters of general comment. Mra Fooka was born ab Camberwell, London, in 1832, aod waa married at Kencington church on January 16 h, 1851, proceeding to New Z.aland by the * Steadfast' to Lyttelton shortly afterwards, aad arriving in the colony in June. She resided in Christchurch until 1878, and during the early part of their colonial experience shared her husband's i lot in those days of privation, living in tents and putting up with a'l the inconveniences I of that period, with the utmost spirib and good sense* After leaving Chrifefcchdrch, aha became settled in Aefybiirton, wti.re, for the fe^ainder of her career, she lived respected ink beloved by hosts of friend?, both old and young. Mrs Tfooks was fond <f outdoor life, making gardening a bobby* In church matters, deceased was an enthusiast, taking a special Interest in everything pertaining to §6 Stephen's church, whilst is charitable #bjeots.'withoat respect to denominatisnaliam the deceased lady was especially noted for her good offices and untiring wal. Mrs Fooke leaveßa large *t.umber cf children and grandchildren, and her loss Is keenly felt by them, as well as by her husband and sister, as Ihe was a devoted wife and mother. Her eldest son is Mr A A Fooks, and Dr Fook% of Tauranga, la another; whilsb Mr H H Fooks, Town Clerk, is her youngest son. Of her five daughters, tha eldest is the wife of Mr McLaren, of Timaru, the other married daughter being Mrs J Fooke, and teere are three daughters unmarried. The funeral takes place on Monday afternoon, at 2 o'clock
