WOMEN TEACHERS.

DEPUTATION TO THE PREMIER

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Wellington, August 24 A deputation from the North Canterbury Women Teachers' Association waited on the Premier and Minister for Education this morning to complain of tie salaries proposed for women under the colonial scale for salaries recommended by the Teachers' Salaries Commission.

The deputation pointed out that the Commission had evidently taken for their model the Otago achools, In which the highest salaries paid to women were from £154 to £165, which they regarded as the maximum to which women might attaint In JNorfch Canterbury, however, very few would receive anything like that, and the majority'wonld be receiving £110 or less for very responsible duties. The Associ* ation contended that if women did the same work as men they were entitled to theMM p r»y« There was no doubt as to the valua of the work done by women teachers The Premier, la replying, said his sympathies were with the deputation, Th© Government did not desire to place women teachers ab a disadvantage in any national soale. The deputation would, however, have to go before Parliament and give evidence on the petitions in support of their claims. If that was done he thought members of Parliament wonld not do an injustice to the women teachers of the colony. The Minister for Education advised the deputation that it would strengthen their case very much if they could get evidence and the snpport of women in other parts of the colony.
