THE RED, WHITE, AND BLUE.
TO THB EDITOR,
Sir,—What a variety of subjeota are I brought under the public notice through the | medium of the correspondence columns of the newspapers. At the present moment the origin and signification of the British ooourB; viz, the red, while, and blue, might, with considerable profit, be ventilated in your paper. I have fcried to imagine myself a recluse, coming suddenly from retirement into the midst of a patriotic British people during the present crisis. Imagine my surprise when I enquire the meaning of the colours—red, white, and blue, whioh almost everybody is wearing; scarcely anyone can tell me their origin and signification. Ofl course I hear from everybody that the British are at war with the Boe.M. Igo to the patriotic meetings, but I am bewildered at the enthusiasm of the people who sing 11 Three cheers for the red, white, and blue," but regard me with suspicion when I enquire the origin and meaning of the Union Jack. I am, etc., Ben Trovatos
