Ashburton Guardian. Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit MONDAY, MARCH 5, 1900. THE RECENT FIRE.
The services of the Fire Brigade were practically not available at the fire on Sunday morning, as no horses were to be got. The Brigade complain bitterly that although the Council pay a considerable sum of money each year for horses to be kept in readiness, the animals were not available, and the Brigade had to wait some twenty-five minutes, and in the meantime the place burned down. As it happens, their services would have been of little use, as the stable destroyed was a mass of flames when the outbreak was discovered. A very serious tire might, however, result from such a state (£ uoreadim-ss, and the Borough Council should see to ifc that the contract for liorseioe; the Brigade's plant is carried i out or terminated.
