THE CHILIAN WAR.

CONFLICTING ACCOUNTS.

[PEE PMSSB ASSOCIATION.

New Yoek, August 26, President Balmaceda was fully informed of the insurgents' plans and the information received from his spies materially aided m checking the attack on the Government position. A "New York Helald" despatch reports than at last date the iusurgents had surrounded Valparaiso on the land side after twelve hours' continuous lighting, though the loyalists numbered double the insurgents, owing to the latter being armed with Remington and Winchester repeating rifles. Fighting round Valparaiso has not yet been renewed. The commanders manoeuvred for the purpose of getting an opening to attack, but without success, and it is generally believed: that the insurgents' coup has proved a failure. The majority of the people m Santiago and Valparaiso are rejoicing over the President's victory. The insurgents are said to be in' the last extremity. London, August 27.
