Ashburton Live Stock Market.

Mr D. Thomas (late with Matson, Cox and Co.) reports upon {the live stock market in the Ashburton district for tho week ending October 31st, 1890, as follows, viz :—On Tuesday, at the Ashbtirton Yards, the usual weekly marktt was held; The entry of sheep was agam a small one, quality being conspicuous by its absence. When two or three lines WRre taken out of the catalogue for the day tho balance was either second-rate sheep or culls. The entry for the day consisted of 2833 sheep and 13 head of ■cattle, of which my entry comprised 1169 sheep and 6 head of cattle. Strange to say there were no fat sheep in, a few .stragglers only being[submitted' for butcher's use. Luckily they were not ■wanted. My principal sales were .:•—B4 j four-tooth crossbreds, very good, 16s 6d ; 20 fat sheep 17s, 37 crossbred ewes and lambs TJs 6d, 223 crossbred ewes and Jambs 11s 6d, 80 crossbred ewes and lambs 12s 6d, 16 mixed sheep 11s 3d to lls 6d, 05 crossbred hoggets 10s 7d, 111 crossbred hoggets 8s Id, 142 crossbred hoggets 8s 6d, &c, Ac. In cattle the prices realised are not worth quoting, although I sold some Iwef ac 20a per 1001b. During the week I have sold for Mr McArthur, 421 crossbred ewes and lambs at 13a 9d on the ground; for Acton Estate, 240 ewes and lambs on the ground at 8s 6d ; and for other clients, 315 crossbred hoggets at lls 9d, 504 crossbred hoggetsvat 10s 3d, Ac, &c. The result of Tuesday's sale was exactly what I foretold in my last report, vis., that if good crossbred hoggets or half fat young erossbreds were placed before the public just now, they would bring higher values than they have yet done this year. They did so; whilst inferior sheep may be quoted easier than they were. On Saturday I held a clearing sale for Messrs Totty Bros., livery stable keepers, Ashburton. I had a very large audience, and everything submitted realised good prices, as follows :—Lady's saddle, £4 15s; gent's do, £110s and £2 7s 6d ; harness, per sot, £2 5s to £4 10s ; double J»«ggy» *20 5s ; single buggy, £8 10s ; waggonette, £16 10s; brake, £8 6s; horses, £8 10s, £13 10s, £17 each, &c., &c. On Friday, at Kemp's Old Farm, I held a clearing sale in conjunction with the National Mortgage Company, of live and dead stock, &c. There was a fair attendance of the public, and considering the age and condition of the articles offered, a very good sale was the result, which to the seller ought to be a happy release. Last week I held my usual fortnightly sale of sheepskins, &c., at which I catalogued 975 sheepskins and small packages of wool. The sale was a good one, prices being even. Beat crossbred green skins made 6s to 6s 6d ; best dry skins, 5s 3d to 6s 3d; best merino skins, os to 5a lid ; best dry merino skins, 4s to 6s 3d each ; dry skins, by the lb, 3£d, sd, 8d to 6|d per lb. , t • ' v ,
