At the Supreme Court criminal sessions there is a small calendar, four cases of minor offences and one of murder. The Grand Jury brought m a true bill agaimfc Main Kahi for the murder of Stephen Maloney m April last. . It is estimated that by the fire at the old Government printing office yesterday morning the Government loss amounted to nearly £15,000, but it is believed that some of the lithographic plant can be rendered fit for use again.j The Government propose to erect a brick building Ja which to carry on lithographic business at a cost of between £4000 and £5000. The building will not be erected on the former site, which i« the property of the Hospital trustees. There is some doubt now, whether the Macquarrie Islands will lie annexed to New Zealand. The petition approved by the New Zealand Parliament for presentation to the Queen, praying that the Islands be annexed to this colony, has been sent to England, but it now appears that one of the branches of the Tasmauian Legislature has declined to pass the petition placing the Islands under New Zealand protection. The Government of Tasmania are now m communication with the New Zealand Government-with, the view of protecting the seals and birds on the Macquarries.
