Sydney, October 2. Sailed—Zealandia, for Auckland. The strike at Broken Hill is estimated to liave cost the men £50,000. After taking legal opinion the shearers have decided to contest the action of squatters m refusing to pay wages to men who struck. Many of thelatter have gone to gaol m preference to paying fines. Melbourne, October 2. The action of Chief Justice Higinbotham m subscribing to the strike fund is causing a good deal of comment. The "Argus" severely handles him, while the " Age " upholds him.
Csbistchurch October 2. The North Canterbury Board of Education decided to-day that the prescribed reading and text books adopted a short time ago shall alone be used m the public schools m the district, after the examination of several schools m 1891, and that the regulation shall remain m force for four years from Ist November next. The Board resuscitated the appointments committee of three, and decided not to appoint a truant officer.
