THE SITUATION IN LYTTELTON.
The work m Lyttelton, the Christchurch papers report, is progressing satisfactorily. There is abundance of non-union labour, and the men are working to the full satisfaction of employers. The Northern Monarch ship was finished yesterday afternoon. She has some 1700 tons of cargo on board, which has been stowed to the satisfaction of the captain. At a largely attended meeting of wharf labourers at Lyttelton the reporter of the Christchurch " Press " was excluded, the reporter of the " Lyttelton Times " being allowed to remain.
Auckland, September 18, The Rosamund arrived from Brisbane. The crew, who were union men, came out this morning. The Taraweea arrived at noon from Sydney. The passengers presented Captain Sinclair with a congratulatory address complimenting him and his officers on the manner m which they had succeeded m getting the ship safely across here m face of the present strike. Several of the Union men on strike, instead of idling about town, are getting work m the country. The Auckland Knights of Labor have protested against certain charges made against Farnall by the Trades and Labor Council of have recommended non-Union labor. They characterise the charges as libels, and have instructed Farnall, who is their Secretary, to take legal advice as to the liability of the Trades and Labor Comicil m the matter. Farnall haa repeated his denial of the charges. Weimngton, September 18. Ministers intend to take the preliminary steps to-morrow m the direction of convening a labor conference, which will be held m Wellington. Sir J. Hector, Messrs R. W. Moody (of Auckland), and W. Brown (of Dunedjn;, have been appointed a Royal Commission to enquire into the grievances of the Gtaey Valley Company employees. Sergeant-Mwjor Phair and five policemen leave for W^sstport to-night, to assist m preserving order fch/ere, Henry Braun, a Unionist, was sentenced to-day to four days' imprisonment for assaulting a free laborer. Oamaru, September, 18. Mr J, A. Millar, of the Maritime Council, (visited Oamaru to-day, and addressed a mass meeting on the Cricket ground. There was a large attendance, but the meeting was uofc of an enthusiastic character. Mr Millar guyu a history of the events that led to the strike, and said ii was brought about through a4eterminaifon on the part of the Shipowners' Association to employ non-Union labor. Referring to the proposed National Steamship Company, he said that within eight weeks the vessels of the Company would be running m the trade. A resolution was passed at the meeting m favor of making a collection jn aid of the strike fund. |^iV yoiy enthusiastic- meeting was hplrt m the Volunteer Hall m the evening, when Mr Millar again addressed a large attendance. The Trades and Labor Council to-night appointed a Committee of i\yts to net m conjunction with one from the Maritime Council U* choose labor candidates (hit nomination at the general election. The Monowai got away for Sydney via Northern ports a few minutes after five, having discharged 200 tons owl taken m close on ?M) tons since her arrival yesterday. A largte crowd assembled to see her off, and there was£ start made at hooting, but Capt. Carey jiirnraptly drowned it with the foghorn.
